Visa-Free Entry for US Citizens
Good news, folks! If you’re planning a trip, Taiwan offers visa-free entry for US citizens or holders of an American passport. Here’s the scoop:
- Duration
You can stay for up to 90 days without a visa. Yep, three whole months to soak in the sights!
- Passport Validity
Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.
- Proof of Return
You’ll need a confirmed return or onward ticket. No one-way tickets here, my friends.
- Purpose of Visit
This visa exemption covers tourism, business, and visiting friends or family.
If 90 days isn’t enough (and trust me, you might want more), you’ll need to apply for a visa. This is what I did for my 4-month stay in Taiwan. You can refer to the steps below.
Or you can travel to nearby countries like Japan or the Philippines, and then come back. More on this on my other blogs.
Types of Taiwan Visas for American Citizens
Okay, so you’ve decided to stay longer or you have a special purpose for your visit. Here are the main types of visas you might need:
- Visitor Visa: For stays longer than 90 days. Perfect for extended holidays, business, or family visits.
- Resident Visa: If you’re planning to work, study, or join family in Taiwan.
- Work Visa: Specifically for employment.
How to Apply for a Taiwan Visa
Step 1: Choose the Right Visa
- Figure out why you’re going and pick the visa that fits.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
- Visa Application Form: Grab it from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) website and fill it out. See TECRO website here
- Passport: Needs to be valid for six months past your stay.
- Passport Photos: Two recent photos.
- Supporting Documents: This could include proof of funds, travel itinerary, invitation letter, and a return ticket.
Step 3: Submit Your Application
- In Person or by Mail: Head to the nearest TECRO office or mail in your application if they allow it.
- Visa Fee: Pay up. Fees vary depending on your visa type.
Step 4: Wait for Processing
- Processing Time: Usually 3-5 business days, but don’t leave it to the last minute.

Special Considerations
- Visa Extensions: If you’re already in Taiwan and want to stay longer, apply for an extension at the National Immigration Agency.
- Multiple Entry Visas: Planning on bouncing in and out of Taiwan? A multiple-entry visa might be your best bet.
- Health and Safety: Make sure you’ve got travel insurance that covers medical expenses and other emergencies. Better safe than sorry!
Travel Tips for Americans in Taiwan
- Cultural Sensitivity: Taiwan has its own unique customs. Do a little research to avoid any faux pas.
- Language: Mandarin is the official language, but you’ll find plenty of English speakers in tourist spots. With my 4 month stay in Taiwan, language was not an issue.
- Currency: The New Taiwan Dollar (NTD) is the way to go. Most places take credit cards, but having some cash is always smart.
- Transportation: Taiwan’s public transport is top-notch. Use the Taipei Metro, buses, and high-speed trains to get around with ease.
- Flying from Seattle to Taipei: There are several non-stop and one-stop flights from Seattle (SEA) to Taipei (TPE). Major airlines like EVA Air, China Airlines, and Delta offer these routes. The flight takes approximately 12-14 hours non-stop. I could personally vouch for EVA Air for their service quality and prices.
Traveling to Taiwan as a US citizen is pretty straightforward, especially with the visa-free entry for short stays. For longer visits or special purposes, just follow the steps outlined here, and you’ll be all set. Taiwan is an amazing destination, and with a bit of prep, you’ll be enjoying your trip in no time. Safe travels, and have an amazing adventure in Taiwan!
